I was watching a little “barefoot contessa” the other day when I discovered this gem. While I didn’t watch it long, (Remember. I’m not black.) It did light the proverbial fire inside me, to make my first post in quite some time. Now back to the post.
Now I don’t have any proof, evidence, research, or qualification of any kind to make the statement I am about to make, … Buuuuut, black people, most certainly, like Down Home With the Nelly’s. WHITE MOMENT Is it just me, or does that not make any sense. Down – home – with…. what? Is there a black translator out there? I could really use an explanation.
The episode “Walkin’ in Memphis” is the episode I caught. I wasn’t surprised to find out that SOUL food (stuff only us like) was the featured food. The next time I have my one black friend over, I may use this episode to prepare a meal he likes. If you try this yourself, I warn you now, do not watch DHN with out subtitles. Especially if you are trying to take down the recipe. I watch Top Chef, you use a teaspoon instead of a tablespoon, and you’ll be packing your knifes and go….ing.
Annnnnddddddddd that’s it, that’s all I got. Just go watch the show and see for yourself.
Ohhh yeah, and the Neely’s have a couch in their yard. A couch. In the yard.
You need to get a life and move on from your prejudice views.
Wow… it’s obvious you only have one black friend because the very fact that you think the color of a persons skin is going to make them like certain things more than others just shows you how shallow and obviously poorly exposed you are.

I currently live in Tennessee and this is absolutely true…although I believe white people love them just as much. I think we see them as “our” Paula Deen. Although we love her too!
I heart Down Home with the Neelys. Pat and Gina adore each other, and one of Pat brothers’ smoking hot!
Down Home.. referring to THE SOUTH.. where most Black families in America were due to being enslaved on Plantations during slavery and during Jim Crow for the economic enrichment of racists (white supremacists). When Black people migrated from the South to other parts of the country ( Did we miss this in history or is American history only focused on what white people have done?) to other areas like the Noooorth or the Wessst for work, they left their families “DOWN ( IN THE SOUTH) HOME”… So nearly every African in America, whose ancestors were brought here by Force in slavery has a family history that comes from “DOWN SOUTH” or home.
2. If ENGLISH is your first language and you are watching a show on a network in which every single host speaks ENGLISH.. including the Neelys, why would you need subtitles? Are you ignorant or slow in comprehension?
I also think you shouldn’t ASSUME that because the Neelys are Black people, that your Black friends will like all of their meals. They cook ALOT of pork. I wouldn’t touch pork or any other scavenger. No matter whose recipe it is. Ask first. Don’t assume.
MY SKIN IS ALMOST HERSHEY CHOCOLATE BROWN AND IM ALLERGIC TO CHICKEN AND HATE WATERMELLON. I AM 100% VEGAN! NO BAR-B-QUE RIBS. NO FAT BACK WITH MY GREENS.I LOVE KALE SAUTEED IN OLIVE OIL.WHATS WRONG WITH ME?I LOVE ALL TYPES OF MUSIC, C&W,CLASSICAL,R&B,VERY MILD RAP WITH VOCALS.JIM NABORS,WAYNE NEWTON;LOVE THEIR VOICES
I want to call you racist but I don’t think that you are. I want to believe that you are just a sheltered ignorant individual who wants to gain attention by writing simple unintelligent post on an obscure website. My 2nd question would be, “Are you just being rhetorical?” Because, I don’t see a difference between the way the Neely’s speak and the way that Paula Dean speaks and how you would be confused. Both, show feature people from the south with southern accents. I would liken it to watching various television shows from England.
In addition, “soul food” is generally from the South, it isn’t white and it isn’t black and just because your sheltered tongue never graces the favor basket of southern food, doesn’t make it alien, inappropriate it or for that matter, outside the realm of general likability. Anyone with an ounce of culture outside of their 4 squared suburban neighbor, would know that “Down Home” is a southern phrase. I would suggest that you stop trying to figure out culture and life through a television set and actually go outside and meet people.
Good Day.
If you go where they are from, both white and black people talk like that. The accent is even worst than the people you see on television. They call it country grammar.
I don’t want to come across as a hater….but this site is trash…seriously, it has barely an iota of the humor that SWPL.com and I am shocked you even attempted this. But hey, A for effort, but next time try being FUNNY. (Actually being black would also help)
There is no apostrophe in Neelys. You’re using the punctuation incorrectly. “Neely’s” implies a singular person named Neely who has something, as in “We went to Neely’s house for dinner.” If you are referring to two people who have the same surname, you add an “s” to indicate the plural and NO apostrophe. One Neely + another Neely = two Neelys.
Black people love their black TV shows. Sanford and Son and the Jeffersons for sure.*
